About the LEVEL Programme
LEVEL is a specialist LGBTQ+ domestic abuse programme informed by the communities it supports. It is designed to address domestic abuse within LGBTQ+ relationships, a serious issue often ignored by mainstream services.
It is being delivered across Calderdale and Kirklees through a partnership between Brunswick and WomenCentre, with development support from The Drive Partnership.
LEVEL offers a one-to-one behaviour change programme, alongside dedicated support for current and former partners affected by harm.
It is a trauma-informed, identity-aware approach that reflects the diversity of LGBTQ+ lives – focussing on:
- Foundations of self-awareness and the desire to change
- Identity, histories, trauma and accountability
- Applying learning to specific harms and new strategies
- Moving forward
Alongside this, tailored support is also available for those people affected by domestic abuse, including current and former partners.
LGBTQ+ experiences of domestic abuse
Domestic abuse can affect LGBTQ+ people in specific ways.
This may include threatening to disclose someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity, deliberately using the wrong pronouns, controlling access to medication or healthcare, isolating someone from LGBTQ+ friends and communities, or using discrimination and prejudice to control, shame or intimidate them.
It can include deadnaming, deliberate misgendering or undermining someone’s gender identity.
These behaviours are forms of abuse, and support is available.
HOW LEVEL CAN HELP
LEVEL provides two distinct types of support:
Support to change harmful behaviour
A one-to-one behaviour-change programme for LGBTQ+ people who have caused harm in their relationships and want to make positive, lasting changes.
Independent support for current or former partners
Dedicated support is available for current or former partners who have been affected by harm. This support focuses on their safety and wellbeing. It does not depend on the other person taking part in or completing the behaviour-change programme.
LEVEL welcomes trans and non-binary people. We will respect your identity, name and pronouns, and work with you without judgement.
Partnership Approach
LEVEL is co-delivered by trained staff at Brunswick and WomenCentre.
Teams work together across Calderdale and Kirklees, supported by shared systems and infrastructure.
The programme combines professional expertise with lived experience and community insight to ensure it is inclusive, trauma-informed, and effective.
Why the Name “LEVEL”?
The name reflects the programme’s core values: equity, justice, and change. LEVEL is about balancing the scales.
It recognises harm, supports growth and helps to build build healthier, safer relationships in LGBTQ+ communities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the service confidential?
We will handle your information carefully. We will explain if we need to share information because of a serious safety or safeguarding concern. LEVEL adheres to the WomenCentre Privacy policy.
Will LEVEL contact the police?
Contacting LEVEL does not automatically mean involving the police. We will explain if information needs to be shared because someone may be at serious risk.
Can I make an anonymous enquiry?
Yes. You can contact us with a general question before deciding whether to provide your details or make a referral.
Who can access LEVEL?
LEVEL supports LGBTQ+ people in Calderdale and Kirklees. Contact us if you are unsure whether you are eligible.
Is LEVEL inclusive of all LGBTQ+ identities?
Yes. LEVEL welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and other LGBTQ+ people, including non-binary people.
What if I am unsure whether I am experiencing abuse or causing harm?
You do not need to be certain before contacting us. We can listen, talk through your concerns and help you consider the next step.
Why LEVEL Matters
Most domestic abuse services are built around heterosexual, cisgender experiences – leaving many LGBTQ+ people without safe, inclusive support. LEVEL challenges this by:
- Recognising the diverse and unique realities of LGBTQ+ communities.
- Addressing how identity, marginalisation and trauma intersect with abusive behaviours.
- Creating safer, more accountable pathways for change and healing.
This programme responds to a clear gap in existing support structures. By focusing on those who have caused harm, LEVEL seeks to reduce risk to others, support long-term change, and improve outcomes for everyone involved.

Brunswick offers a suite of services and projects to various communities in Calderdale and Kirklees.
WomenCentre
WomenCentre provides holistic, one-stop services at their centres in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Halifax and in the community.
A National Commitment to Systems Change
LEVEL is one of several innovative projects supported through the Drive Partnership’s National Systems Change initiative, which works to reform how domestic abuse is addressed across the UK.
These pilot projects focus on those who are often excluded from support – aiming to learn, evolve, and create better systems.
